# How to treat water you scooped from outside

> A creek, a pond, or a rain barrel can all be made safer with the right order. You will learn settle, filter, then treat, and why the home jug still matters most.

Part of the [Water](https://bordernest.com/silo/water.md) guides.

I would not drink straight from a creek because a video said a filter is magic. If you are away from the home jug, the order below is what keeps the gut calm and the day moving.

## Settle first, then filter

The biggest mistake people make is pushing muddy water straight into a filter and wondering why the flow dies. Let the grit settle in the container for a minute, or pour it through a clean cloth, so the filter is not eating mud. That single step doubles the life of your filter and keeps the flow honest when you need it most. Do this today: set a clean bandana or coffee filter aside in your bag so you are not improvising at the creek.

## The filter, the straw, or the tablets

Sawyer squeeze and mini filters screw onto a pouch or bottle and let you push water through by hand. Backflush it the way the card in the box says, and practice that backflush at home on a Saturday so it is not new to you when the water is cold. LifeStraw is a personal straw, so one person drinks through it at a time, and it does not go on a shared container. Tablets only work after the water is in a clean container, and the bottle label is the only dose and wait you should trust. A guessed wait is how people get sick, so I am not printing one here.

Check today's price on Amazon for the filter below before you add it to your kit.

**Sawyer: Sawyer MINI Water Filtration System.** The pouch filter. Learn the backflush on a Saturday before you need it.

Check today's price on Amazon for the straw if that is the tool someone in your group will actually use.

**LifeStraw: LifeStraw Personal Water Filter.** The straw, one drinker at a time, no shared container.

Check today's price on Amazon for the tablets that finish the job on water you already collected.

**Potable Aqua: Potable Aqua Water Purification Tablets, two 50-count bottles.** Tablets for water already in a container. The label wins, always.

If the listing does not say purifier, do not tell yourself it handles viruses. Filters catch bacteria and protozoa, and only purifiers or the right chemical step handle viruses. The water that matters most is still the jug at home, and the next guide shows you how to keep it ready without losing the closet.
