How to store emergency water without wrecking the closet

A stay-put water plan that uses the space you already have: closet floor, under beds, and a single rotation date.

Pick a number of people (include pets). Multiply by 14 gallons. That is the stay-put target. A family of three plus a dog is not a pretty stack of boutique bottles — it is a pile you have to live with.

Steps

  1. Count heads, including animals and anyone who might land on your couch.
  2. Buy food-grade containers or unopened commercial water. Milk jugs crack and leach.
  3. Store dark and cool. Label the fill or buy date in marker.
  4. Rotate on a calendar reminder every 6–12 months. Drink or water plants — do not hoard mystery water.
  5. Keep a treat method next to the stack so a punctured jug is not a crisis.
