# How a minnow trap works, and when the law says no

> A funnel trap lets minnows swim in and makes the way out hard to find, so the law decides whether you ever set one. Read your state fishing rules before the trap touches the water.

The cupboard feeds the house, and a minnow trap is a skill you only practice where the state says you can. Most wildlife agencies allow certain wire or mesh traps for bait minnows, require your name and contact info on the gear, and tell you how often you must check it. If your state lists minnow traps as illegal or limits them to specific waters, the trap stays in the garage and you move on to other protein sources. The design itself is simple, which is why it works so well. Fish follow the scent of the bait through a small funnel opening on one end, then end up in a chamber where the same funnel is harder to find from the inside. A wire minnow trap is just a sturdier version of the classic soda bottle trap, where the top is cut off and flipped around to point back into the bottle.

## If you are allowed to set one

- Check the species, the season, and whether the trap has to be labeled with your name and tended on a set schedule. Your state wildlife page is the source of truth, not a forum post.
- Bait it with a slice of bread, a handful of dry dog food, or another oily option, and tie the trap off so it cannot drift into deeper water or float away.
- Pull it when the rule says to pull it, release anything you are not allowed to keep, and rinse the trap with fresh water before storage so it lasts more than one season.

Before you order, take a minute to confirm your state actually allows the trap you are about to buy.

**Gee's: Gee's G-40 Minnow Trap.** Gee's G-40 wire minnow trap. Confirm on the live Amazon page that you are buying one trap and not a bulk pack you did not mean to order.

**Amazon Basics: Amazon Basics 550 Paracord, 100 foot.** Paracord to tie the trap off. The listing describes roughly 100 feet of 550 Type III, so verify the length on the page before you check out.

A bottle trap is the same funnel made from a two liter, and it carries the same legal question. Do this today: open your state wildlife agency website, search for minnow trap rules, and write down whether traps are allowed in your county before you ever load bait. The meals that matter this month are still The first grocery trip, before any bucket.
