# Containers that should not hold drinking water

> A kitchen counter, a row of empty jugs, and the quiet rule that only drinking-water containers store drinking water. Students learn which plastics to skip and why a clean-looking bottle can still ruin a supply.

Part of the [Water](https://bordernest.com/silo/water.md) guides.

## Why the container matters as much as the water

The water you store is only as safe as the jug it sits in, and most household plastics were never meant to hold something you will drink weeks or months later. A container that held chemicals can leach residues into the water even after a thorough rinse, and the plastic itself may not be rated for long contact with a beverage. Think of the jug as part of the water, because over time it becomes part of the water.

## Skip these, even if they look clean

- Old milk jugs. The plastic is thin, the fat from milk soaks into the walls, and the smell is almost impossible to remove. They also deform in a warm closet.
- Used cleaner, bleach, or fuel jugs. Traces of the original product can stay in the plastic and move into your drinking water.
- Paint buckets and pails. These are not food-grade and the lid is rarely a true seal.
- Old soda bottles for long storage. They are fine for a short walk, but the thin PET lets in air over weeks and the bottle can pick up off flavors. Treat them as a carry bottle, not a shelf.

## What to use instead

Pick a jug that was sold to hold drinking water, with a spigot or a tight screw cap, and a food-grade rating you can read on the jug itself. If you would not drink straight from the container because it tastes like the last thing it held, it is not stored water. A simple test: smell the empty jug after rinsing. Any ghost of the old contents means the jug is out.

## Do this today

Walk to wherever you keep empty bottles and pull every jug that ever held milk, cleaner, fuel, or paint. Put them in the recycling bin, not back in the water stack. Replace each one with a container rated for drinking water so your supply is only stored in jugs that belong there.

**Reliance: Reliance Aqua-Tainer 7 Gallon.** A food grade jug with a spigot that is built to sit on a shelf full of drinking water.

## Rotate so the water stays fresh

Filling the right jug is only half the job, because water that sits for a year tastes flat and may grow biofilm. Dating the jug the day you fill it is what turns a full shelf into a working supply. For the simple labeling and rotation method, read How to date the jug so you actually rotate it and open the water shop to start with the jugs we trust first.
