A 72-hour bag you would actually carry
Three days on your back if you have to leave. So small bottles, a few bars, copies of your papers, a whistle, and a thin shelter. If you cannot lift it down the stairs, it is not packed.
Why the bag is its own job
The home plan on this site is longer, about two weeks, and it stays put under the bed or in the closet. The bag is the other job, and it has to move with you. Water for the bag is small bottles you can actually carry, not the floor jug that lives next to the water heater. Food is a few dense bars in a zip bag, not a case of canned soup. The rule is simple: if you cannot lift the packed bag down the stairs with one hand on the rail, it is not packed yet.
What goes in, and why
A go bag and a stay-home pile do different jobs, so the contents should not overlap much. You want a thin shelter you can unfold over the seat of the car if the car becomes the bed for the night. You want copies of your papers in a zip sleeve, because a wet wallet helps no one. You want a whistle on a lanyard, since yelling tires your throat and a whistle carries further. You want a small light, a spare battery, and a way to start a fire outside when you stop for the night. Do this today: weigh your bag on a bathroom scale, then subtract ten pounds from what you think you can carry, and remove whatever pushes you over that number.
The smaller cousin at work
A work bag for one day you cannot get home is the smaller cousin that lives at the office or in the trunk. It holds a bottle of water, two bars, a thin shell layer, and the same copies of your papers. It is not the same as the 72-hour bag, and it is not meant to be. The point of both is that you can pick them up without thinking, walk to the door, and keep moving.
